When you are within an area of 15 to 20 miles radius of Manston, you are well advised to contact Manston App., for a "Flight Information Service".

There are "Heavies" leaving airways by descent inbound for Manston and departing to join controlled airspace.

If you are inbound--. On first contact with Approach make your call with the current ATIS code and QNH.

Please make that call at approx 20 miles to run.

e.g- Coming from the SW, as you cross the M20 is a good time.

Arriving from the Continent, then as you enter UK airspace. This is quite important because most inbound 747's etc will be descending through the Dover VOR (DVR) to intercept the ILS for runway 28. or the DME arc for runway 10.(Descending thru 5000 for 2500).

From the West or NW then Sittingbourne or Sheppey(or N abeam) is about right. From this direction also note that you will probably conflict with the Instrument Approach for Runway 10 at some stage and your 747 will be level at 2500 QNH at 10 miles to run. So I reinforce the message to make your call in good time. Remember 747's and the like trail some mighty wake vortices, and you don't want to be there.

None of the above is a big deal really,as yet Manston is not that busy (yet) but be aware.

Also another reminder that PPR is mandatory.

Manston waives landing fees for emergency or un-forecast bad weather. But if you are caught out by poor visibility or low cloud in the English Channel, don't push your luck, the Flying Club at Manston is understanding. ( It administers the landing fees).

This website is not authorised by the Manston Authorities, but I aim to give you the best information and this is gathered from my experience, and our good friends in ATC.

FAQ. Do I HAVE to call Manston outside their ATZ? No you don't, but if you don't want to have a bad day, then do it..
